I’ve been invited to go back to my old high school and talk to the stagecraft class about what I do and stuff.

I have to bring a portfolio. Awesome. I’ve made like three in the last month. I guess fourth time’s the charm.

Aw well, should be fun to explain to the high school technicians how vastly different it is in the university/professional world.

I’m excited!

USITT Update.

A recap of my USITT experience:

  • Day 1: Fancy-ish dinner with the dean of our department, the dean of the science/tech department, costuming professor, facilities manager, and other assorted theatre folk.
  • Day 2: Four sessions, (Foliage, Digital Portfolios, Digital Painting, West Coast Scenic - Painting). The keynote speaker was pretty interesting and during opening night the award winning young technicians heavily depressed me due to extremely high quality of their work.
  • Day 3: Northwest Regional Section Meeting, met some people from Central. People from PNTA, Village Theatre and Fifth Ave were there. And then the STAGE EXPO opened. HUZZAH. Glory to all the free swag. I could barely fit it all in my luggage. Then the session “PROPlem Solving with PROPer Communication”. Hooray for props. Then “Theatre Designers Working in Film and Television”. Afterwards we had the USITT Tumblr Tech Meet Up, where we met up with 16 people total.
  • Day 4: More Stage Expo! Then USITT Student Roundtable. We’re going to created a student chapter of USITT at our school. I’m looking forward to it. And “Properties at Cirque du Soleil”. They make incredibly fantastic stuff. And the Tech Olympics… Please don’t ask me how that went.
  • Day 5: Even more Stage Expo. Interview with Cirque du Soleil. Interview with the Shakespeare Theatre New Jersey. Both went pretty well. Here’s hoping. Will be applying to the Home Shopping Network and another entertainment-based company. Then we walked around the beach/pier area a bit. Then closing night happened with plenty of yummy food.

All in all, a pretty successful trip, with copious amounts of swag.

USITT: DAY I

  • Foliage Session: I wanna build a forest!
  • Digital Portfolio: Very informative.
  • Digital Printing: Boring for some strange reason. Disney totally stole the show.
  • West Coast Scenic: I’m completely jealous of their skills.

Also please remember that the USITT TUMBLR TECHNICIAN MEET UP is happening tomorrow at 9pm (After the New Product Showcase) at Cold Stone Creamy in the area referred to as “The Pike”.

Here’s a lovely map I put together for you:

If you kept walking downward off the map, you’d get to the waterfront.

UPDATE #2:

Here is the decided upon meet-up place and time.

TIME: THURSDAY MARCH 29TH AT 9:00PM

(You’ll probably need some time to walk from the convention center, so more like 9:15-9:20pm).

PLACE: COLD STONE CREAMERY

25 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802

A is the convention center. B is Cold Stone.

Message me if you have any questions!

See you all there!

UPDATE #1:

Here’s a list of tumblr technicians who are currently interested in coming:

And at least one of the above people actually has to work at the conference, so it looks like it’s best to meet after the conference wraps up for the day.

  • Tuesday - Conference hasn’t really started yet. Quy and I do have a dinner that night though. But we’d probably have time after that (no idea what time yet)
  • Wednesday - The Opening of the conference lasts until 10:15pm.
  • Thursday - There’s a “New Product Showcase” that lasts until 9pm
  • Friday - The Tech Olympics lasts until 10:15pm.
  • Saturday - Closing night ends at 9:30pm.
  • Sunday - Sorry, Quy and I have a plane to catch at 10am.

I’m thinking if we find some sort of late-open place (like a Shari’s/Denny’s/iHop… or something better) near-by, that would be the best place for a meet-up. I’m looking for places like that in the area right now.

I’d also like to meet earlier in the week so that we could possibly have other people to go to sessions/workshops with. But if that doesn’t work then I’m fine with meeting on Friday or Saturday.

Please message me/reblog this with your comments/suggestions!

Alright Tumblr Theatre Technicians!

I’m throwing it out to the community to decide when/where we want to do this, but I definitely want to meet as many Tumblr Technicians attending USITT as possible.

If you are a technician and attending USITT, please reblog this with your suggestions.(Or send me a message.
The conference session schedule is here for reference.  I will compile these and send a message to the whole group with the top ideas. Yay Democracy!

Quy & I will be traveling together so unfortunately you’re going to meet her too. (Don’t look her directly in the eye, trust me, she’s terrifying.) She’s adorable! You’ll love her! We will be there from around 4:00pm Tuesday to 10:00am Sunday. (Although we have a dinner on Tuesday with the dean of our department).

Look forward to seeing all of you lovelies there!

Who’s going?

I highly recommend going to SETC to all you Theatre Tech types in College.

Reasons:

  • You can get a cool summer internship far away.
  • If you get an internship: networking. (I still talk to my props master all the time).
  • You can meet other awesome technicians. They have a fun tech mixer at the beginning of the conference. (I still talk to a props master/carpenter/scenic designer type that I met at SETC last year.)
  • NETWORKING. (Meet people who can get you jobs!)
  • Interview training. Even if you don’t get a job, you just got a ton of interview experience!
  • Workshops. The classes are awesome.
  • There’s a little expo with cool free stuff/samples.
  • Looking for transfer/go to grad school? There’s all sorts of booths for that.

In summary: Go to SETC. You will not regret it.

If you are a theatre technician on tumblr, please come to my blog and hit the “Theatre Technician Survey” link, reblog it and fill it out.

This is a great way for us to get to know each other and network with one another.
Plus you can find other people who specialize in the same things you do and it’s always delightful to find a kindred spirit.

PLEASE HELP.

I need to send in a photo or two or three of my time in Charlotte. It needs to be something I’d put in my portfolio.

So PLEASE go here and look at all the pictures on the first page (until you get to the light-up swords, those are from my university) and tell me which ones are the coolest/best.

This is to inspire Freshmen to follow in my footsteps and go get internships/summer jobs.

Thank you so much!

Note: It also doesn’t need to be a picture of a finished product.
