When I am between shows

theatremajors:

What is this “between shows” you speak of?

When a production is over

This right here is tech week.

Good god, how does that gif capture all of my feelings?

The Most Interesting Technician In The Room ›

From USITT. SO HILARIOUS.

Theatre: Family vs. Opportunity

As you all know, I have an internship at Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey.

And I live on the west coast.

Which means nearly every time I tell someone I have said internship, this conversation follows, nearly word for word:

Me: I have a summer internship in New Jersey.

Person: Wow. Cool. Do you have friends or family there?

Me: No.

Person: Isn’t it hard to be away from your family for that long?

Me: Uh, yeah sure, but this is for the benefit of my career and future.

Person: Don’t you have a boyfriend? Doesn’t it just kill you not to be around him?

Me: Yeah, it’s difficult but, we made it through last summer just fine. He supports my career decisions as I would support his if he wanted to go off somewhere far away. If he thought it would benefit him or it was a dream he wanted to seize, I’d stand behind him all the way and he does the same for me.

Person: I can’t stand the thought of not being around my boyfriend for that long.

Me: It’s only three months.

Person: All I’m saying is, I wouldn’t be able to do it.

I just don’t get it. This kind of response doesn’t really happen when someone goes away to college for four years. But I go away for three months and that’s major

My family, boyfriend, and friends are ultra supportive of me. They all know that I’d love to travel and work in some of the big cities like NYC, Vegas, or LA. Working in Seattle for the rest of my life may disappoint me. I want a career. I don’t want to end up in my hometown from now until the end of eternity. This doesn’t mean I don’t love my parents. But I’ve wanted to leave this state since I was in high school. We couldn’t afford for me to go out of state, so this is my chance. And I am getting some amazing opportunities! Why would I want to put a geography-based limit on my dreams? How are other people not curious about all these amazing places they’ve never been to before? And all the other incredible theatres throughout this country? If you turn down an opportunity it may never come back again! I’m not one to let something incredible pass me by because I’ll have to move away for a couple of months!

I am ambitious and my friend and family know this. And they know that if I end up moving to NYC, it’s not because I don’t love them enough to stay, it’s because I’m going to live my dreams, god damnit! And nothing is going to stop me

If Stage Manager were a pokemon

tyrannosauridae:

teethandambitions:

it’d know Hyper Voice, Scary Face, Helping Hand, and Rage.

Lighting Tech would know Signal Beam, Flash, Spark, and Overheat.

If an actor was a pokemon, it would know Mimic, Fake Tears, Chatter, and Role Play.

If a singer was a pokemon, it would know Sing, Screech, Perish Song, and Metronome.

If a dancer was a pokemon, it would know Teeter Dance, Agility, Rapid Spin and  Dive.

If a director was a pokemon, it would know Encore, Glare, Frustration, Explosion

If a set designer was a pokemon, it would know Facade, Drill Run, Work Up, and Hammer arm.

If a theater newbie was a pokemon, it would only be able to learn Confusion and nothing else until it evolved into one of the higher evolutions.

If a Props Master was a pokemon, it would know Magic Room, Skill Swap, Conversion, and Rage. But it would be able to learn anything.

Yesterday I got a little mad at the Projectionist for springing a prop list on me five days from the shoot. Today this happened.

  • Me: (Walking into the paint room) I'm all yours for painting today.
  • Student Scenic Designer: Cool, I'll just finish mixing this-
  • Scenic Advisor/Design Professor: (Walks in) Man! Did you see Liz yesterday!? She had that poor little projectionist- is that guy a freshman? Sophomore?
  • Me: I think he may be a sophomore or a junior.
  • SA/DP: If he's a junior, she had him down to freshman in two seconds flat. She had him trembling, the lower lip quivering everything. She was tearing him a new one, "WHAT IS WITH THIS NEW PROPS LIST? WHERE'D THIS TREE COME FROM? DID THIS TREE GROW OUT OF MY ASS? I THINK IT GREW OUT OF MY ASS!"
  • Me: My exact words.
  • SSD: I think [SA/DP] should reenact everything that happens in this department.
  • SA/DP: And today, [Head Projectionist/ Acting Professor] e-mailed me and said he was sorry for springing the list on us. Damn right he was sorry!

Got my job back at the scene shop.

Conversation went as follows:

Me: (Looking up internships in the design lab)

TD: (Bursts into the room) Hi!

Me: Hi!

TD: You want a job?

Me: Sure.

TD: Paid?

Me: Yes please.

TD: Good. Tell [theatre department admin] to reinstate you so we can get you back on the books as soon as possible. Bye! (Leaves)

USITT Update.

A recap of my USITT experience:

  • Day 1: Fancy-ish dinner with the dean of our department, the dean of the science/tech department, costuming professor, facilities manager, and other assorted theatre folk.
  • Day 2: Four sessions, (Foliage, Digital Portfolios, Digital Painting, West Coast Scenic - Painting). The keynote speaker was pretty interesting and during opening night the award winning young technicians heavily depressed me due to extremely high quality of their work.
  • Day 3: Northwest Regional Section Meeting, met some people from Central. People from PNTA, Village Theatre and Fifth Ave were there. And then the STAGE EXPO opened. HUZZAH. Glory to all the free swag. I could barely fit it all in my luggage. Then the session “PROPlem Solving with PROPer Communication”. Hooray for props. Then “Theatre Designers Working in Film and Television”. Afterwards we had the USITT Tumblr Tech Meet Up, where we met up with 16 people total.
  • Day 4: More Stage Expo! Then USITT Student Roundtable. We’re going to created a student chapter of USITT at our school. I’m looking forward to it. And “Properties at Cirque du Soleil”. They make incredibly fantastic stuff. And the Tech Olympics… Please don’t ask me how that went.
  • Day 5: Even more Stage Expo. Interview with Cirque du Soleil. Interview with the Shakespeare Theatre New Jersey. Both went pretty well. Here’s hoping. Will be applying to the Home Shopping Network and another entertainment-based company. Then we walked around the beach/pier area a bit. Then closing night happened with plenty of yummy food.

All in all, a pretty successful trip, with copious amounts of swag.

*Tumblr Tech Meet Up picture to come.

USITT: DAY I

  • Foliage Session: I wanna build a forest!
  • Digital Portfolio: Very informative.
  • Digital Printing: Boring for some strange reason. Disney totally stole the show.
  • West Coast Scenic: I’m completely jealous of their skills.

Also please remember that the USITT TUMBLR TECHNICIAN MEET UP is happening tomorrow at 9pm (After the New Product Showcase) at Cold Stone Creamy in the area referred to as “The Pike”.

Here’s a lovely map I put together for you:

If you kept walking downward off the map, you’d get to the waterfront.

UPDATE #2:

Here is the decided upon meet-up place and time.

TIME: THURSDAY MARCH 29TH AT 9:00PM

(You’ll probably need some time to walk from the convention center, so more like 9:15-9:20pm).

PLACE: COLD STONE CREAMERY

25 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802

A is the convention center. B is Cold Stone.

Message me if you have any questions!
